January 30, 2012
University of Glamorgan Lighting Design and Live Event Technology students were recently presented with the latest equipment from Czech-based moving light company, Robe, and UK-based lighting console manufacturer, Avolites, at the University’s Treforest campus.
The product showcases and demonstrations gave students the opportunity to learn about new developments in lighting technology and meet professionals currently working in the industry.
Second year BSc (Hons) Lighting Design and Technology student Matt Parker said: “We were allowed hands-on time to test out the equipment for ourselves, getting time to explore the features available to us in the industry today. The importance of networking was also emphasised and we had the opportunity to exchange business cards with the trainers and meetings were arranged for upcoming exhibitions and trade shows.”
Demonstrations were given by Emma Thompson, Training Coordinator for Avolites, and Ian Brown, Sales Director at Robe. Ian showcased the company’s new LED fixtures, proving how far LED technology has developed.
Cardiff based T&M Technical Services were also present at the Cube facility, the University’s dedicated flexible space for Lighting Design and Live Event Technology courses, where students can practice rigging up for all sorts of events and even stage their own activities.
Stuart Green, Senior Lecturer in the University’s Faculty of Advanced Technology said: “Events such as this are invaluable for our students. It enables them to learn more about their chosen field and develop professional contacts. The feedback from industry is extremely positive, with potential employers saying that we are producing excellent graduates.”
