Success for creative writing students
November 10, 2011
Two postgraduate creative writing students from the University of Glamorgan have recently won awards acknowledging their work in writing.
Current MPhil in Writing student, Carys Shannon, has won an Arts Council of Wales training grant.
This grant funds her to attend a Ty Newydd course in Writing in Health & Social Care with the National Association of Writers in Education (NAWE).
The announcement of Carys’ funding grant also coincides with the recent success of Masters in Writing graduate Victor Tapner who won the East Anglian poetry book prize last week.
Awarded during the East Anglian Books Awards, sponsored by Jarrold’s and UEA, held in the Writer’s Centre in Norwich for his superb collection Flatlands published by Salt, Victor’s triumph follows recognition he previously gained as the winner of the Cardiff International Poetry Competition.
Professor Chris Meredith commented: “Carys joined the MPhil in Writing this year and already has a track-record of publishing success. I’m thrilled that she’s won this grant, which underlines the vocational and community-based strengths that creative writing can have.
“Victor Tapner is an established journalist and novelist; we in the business have known for a long time what a fine poet he is too. At last he’s getting the recognition he so deserves.”
