Glamorgan lecturer recognised among best in UK

July 28, 2011

University of Glamorgan lecturer Dr Heather Skinner has been awarded a prestigious UK-wide accolade for the quality of her teaching with the award of a National Teaching Fellowship.

The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme, launched in 2000 is part of an overall programme run by the Higher Education Academy to raise the status of learning and teaching in higher education, and recognises and rewards teaching excellence. It is open to all higher education institutions in the UK.

Dr Skinner said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been given this award. This fellowship is among the first to be awarded in Wales, which makes me feel very proud indeed. I also firmly believe that this award reflects the very high importance the University of Glamorgan places on delivering an excellent student learning experience, and also reflects the fantastic support for learning, teaching and assessment that is provided by the University’s Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching.”

The citation observes that, since Dr Skinner’s appointment to the full-time faculty of Glamorgan Business School in 2001, she continues to deliver an exceptional student experience and to research and produce exceptional levels of output. This including two awards for ‘Best Overall Paper’ and two further awards for ‘Paper in Track’ at international conferences, and many publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Heather has an excellent reputation as an effective, committed, energetic, enthusiastic, and creative teacher, passionate about her areas of expertise, and able to engender a passion for learning in others. Her scholarly activities are underpinned by the high level and quality of her teaching, ability to engage students with both the subject matter and the nature of scholarly enquiry, and commitment to developing the skills required of graduates by industry. Her approach is designed to ensure students have the ability to think critically about their actions, are able to generate creative solutions to marketing problems, and, when in a management role, will be able to evaluate the impact of potential courses of action on their organisation and its stakeholders.

Student feedback highlights not only Heather’s enthusiasm and innovative delivery approach, but also that students recognise the innovative way she approaches the subject content, embedding a critical and relevant approach to the subject.

Colleagues in the University’s Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching say that Heather has ‘played a significant part in enhancing learning and teaching across the University’, and within the Business School it is recognised that her ‘research informed knowledge without question is boosting the relevance and interest in the marketing subject area’. Heather is recognised as an expert in her academic field of place marketing while continuing to take an active interest in pedagogy as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, motivating and encouraging colleagues to strive for continuous improvement of the student experience.
