Glamorgan aircraft maintenance engineering graduates land jobs with British Airways

December 15, 2011

Three graduates from the University of Glamorgan’s Aircraft Maintenance Engineering degree programme are off to a flying start having been offered jobs at British Airways Maintenance Cardiff (BAMC).

Glamorgan graduates Henryk Golaszewski, left, and Zachary Kanaa, right, at BAMC Zachary Kanaa, Henryk Golaszewski and Jahanzeb Mohammed are now employed as mechanics with the company.

The success, in part, was down to dedicated hands-on aircraft maintenance experience with real aircraft facilities thanks to a recent £1.8m investment programme at the University of Glamorgan’s Aircraft Maintenance Training Centre on the Treforest campus.

Billy Kelly, General Manager BAMC said: “We were delighted to employ the University of Glamorgan graduates. We believe that apprenticeships and degree programmes are absolutely crucial in providing the engineers of the future. The University of Glamorgan provides students with the skills and knowledge we are looking for.”

BAMC is located near Cardiff International Airport and is a wholly owned subsidiary of British Airways. It carries out heavy maintenance on British Airways long-haul aircraft: specifically, Boeing 747-400, Boeing 777-200, Boeing 767 and recently Boeing 777-300 Series.

Aircraft maintenance engineering students at the University of Glamorgan benefit from the latest facilities: with engineering labs, the University’s own full-size BAE Jetstream 31 commercial plane, and an MP521 flight simulator.

James Collington, Aircraft Maintenance Training Co-ordinator at the University said: “Here at the University we work hard with industry professionals to ensure that what we teach our students meets industry standards. We give them practical hands on experience: placing them in a good position when applying for jobs.

Zachary Kanaa, one of the three BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering graduates now working at BAMC said: “My degree at Glamorgan helped me by giving me the knowledge and key skills required to get a good start in the industry. With the addition of the new aerospace centre I got some vital hands on experience that is so hard to get in this industry.”
