Olympian Darren Campbell launched the new £5m student union at Glamorgan’s Treforest campus today, Monday 27 September 2010.
The state-of-the-art building uses the latest design and building techniques and includes music venues, bars, conference facilities, and the latest student support facilities. These include a hairdresser and beauty salon, run by a local businesswoman, and catering outlets.
The Vice Chancellor, Julie Lydon, said: “This iconic building is a real milestone in our investment programme to give our students the very best facilities, making sure they have a first class education and student experience at Glamorgan.”
Built to BREAM excellence standards by South Wales contractors Vinci, the project used local contractors, labour and materials wherever possible. The Glamorgan Students’ Union was involved in the design of the building by Rio Architects Ltd.
Helen Wakeford, President of the Students; Union, added: “We’re delighted to have the best student union in Wales here. The reaction of the students has been overwhelmingly positive: it will be well used and much appreciated.”
The University of Glamorgan Students’ Union employs more than 50 people and is a major contributor to the local economy. The new building will be accessible to the community in Treforest and its surrounding areas for meetings, concerts and social events.
