Student Anthology celebrates a decade of excellence

March 10, 2010

University of Glamorgan students are ready once again to launch their annual creative writing anthology, ‘DAPS’ on March 12th 2010.

In its 10th year, DAPS is completely student managed editorial, and this year’s launch celebrations will be bigger than ever, providing a platform for budding writers to get the first taste of life as a writer.

It will showcase the best written works by students this year, extensively debated upon and chosen by an editorial board, which consists of writers of all kinds of genres.

Last year’s edition was honoured by a quote from Dylan Thomas Award nominee, Ross Raisin, while a former winner of the same prize and an ex student of the university, Rachel Trezise attended the book launch.

This year, the anthology will include a foreword from the editor of the first ever edition of DAPS in 2000, Maria Donovan, 2007 winner of the Lancet Fiction competition (Pumping up Napoleon, Tea for Mr Dead) and an introduction by this year’s T.S Elliot prize winner, Phillip Gross.

Writers currently held in very high esteem, such as Trevor Byrne and Rachel Trezise have all supported the book, which also boasts contributions from current editor of CLIC Online, Ryan Heeger, and sub-editor Daniel Grosvenor.

The book will be available from the University campus shop, and will contain a first glance at future writers, as has been the trait over numerous years.

This year’s board is headed by young comedian turned writer, John Blunden, who has himself been published in previous editions of the book.

He echoed his excitement at heading the book on its very special 10th anniversary. “The book is a very important platform,’ he said. “It provides the students with an insight into the world of publishing, whether that be working and editing a publication, or simply to provide students with their first opportunity to be in print.

“This is a very important experience for anyone hoping to enter the publishing industry, and the final outcome of a year’s hard work will be something of which all involved can be proud.”

Chris Meredith, winner of prizes such as the Eric Gregory Award and the Arts Council of Wales Young Writer Prize, believes the book will prove as an excellent launching pad for aspiring writers.
He said: “Through the first decade of this century, Daps has established itself as the liveliest annual anthology of new undergraduate writing I know. It’s run entirely by undergraduate writing students at the University of Glamorgan, but for everybody.
