Welsh poet at open mic night
November 5, 2009
Welsh poet and playwright Patrick Jones is headlining the Glamorgan GATES open mic night on Tuesday November 10th.
The Open Mic nights are run as part of the University of Glamorgan’s GATES Project in The Belle Vue, Merthyr Tydfil on the second Tuesday of each month.
The aim is to offer musicians, singers or poets a supportive and friendly atmosphere in which to showcase their talent, whilst promoting local music and providing a social night with a difference for people in Merthyr Tydfil.
Entry is free to all, and the night starts at 7.30pm.
Patrick has a new album full of poetry set to music, and his night in Merthyr will be part of the album tour. He has worked with a number of high profile musicians including Billy Bragg, Nicky Wire and James Dean Bradfield of the Manics as well as Martyn Joseph.
GATES is also currently running a ‘Recycle Your Old Jewellery’ project. The idea is to encourage people to bring in old items of beaded jewellery, and teach them the techniques to turn old beads into new pieces of jewellery as well as being more adventurous and making items out of things such as nuts and bolts or drinks can ring pulls.
The project will culminate in an exhibition of the completed recycled jewellery items in the GATES shop on Merthyr high street on 21st November.
The Glamorgan GATES projects is run by the University’s Centre for Lifelong Learning.
