Honorary Doctorate for Welsh Physicist

Dr Lyndon Rhys Evans, high-profile leader of the Large Hadron Collider Project has today, 14th July, received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Glamorgan.

Born in Aberdare in 1945, Dr Evans is now a world’s leading physicists working at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN).

Large Hadron Collider Project is a highly complex circular tunnel, 18 miles long and Europe’s flagship scientific instrument for the investigation of the high-energy frontier in particle physics with a materials budget of over £1 billion pounds.

As well as being a Commander of the British Empire (CBE), Dr Evans was awarded the American Physical Society Robert R Wilson Prize for ‘a sustained career of technical innovation and leadership’.

Speaking at the ceremony at the University’s Treforest campus today Dr Evans commented, “It is a great honour to receive this award from the University of Glamorgan today. For more than 100 years this institution has been providing the skills needed by the community and this continues today by providing students with the high tech skills required by industry.

“The University of Glamorgan is making a name for itself internationally, particularly in the field of hydrogen research. I am confident that all of the graduates here today have had a first class education at Glamorgan and are equipped with the skills needed for the working world.”

President of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Professor Zheng Wentang who has led the development of a successful international partnership with the University of Glamorgan also received an Honorary Doctorate at the ceremonies today.
