Cardiff/Glamorgan UCCE Team Play Cambridge University This WeekendThe University of Glamorgan is sponsoring this weekend’s University Centres of Excellence Cricket Match at Ynysyngharad Park in Pontypridd this weekend, in the last match of the season.
Glamorgan, in partnership with UWIC and Cardiff University last year became one of only six English Cricket Board Centres of Cricketing Excellence in the UK. In last year’s inaugural season, the Cardiff/Glamorgan team triumphed against Cambridge, Oxford and Leeds/Bradford Universities.
This season has been badly affected by the weather, but this couldn”t prevent the team defeating Durham at Sophia Gardens, the first time in nearly a decade that a British Universities team has beaten the side. Kevin Lyons, Director of Cricket for the Centre, said the rain-affected season had been a disappointment, but wouldn”t affect the momentum of the scheme.
“The outstanding victory against Durham meant that in the past season and a half, we have beaten Oxford, Cambridge and Durham, the leading universities in the UK – a terrific start for the Centre,” he said. ” Looking ahead to next year, the only player we’re losing is the captain, Alistair Bressington, so competition for places will again be keen when the new intake of students arrive in October. We’re fully expecting to be able to maintain our winning form next season.”
If the team does well in the final match of the season this weekend, there’s a chance of going through to the final at Lords.
Key Glamorgan University players in Saturday’s team will be Alex French, the batsman and off-spin bowler, voted last season’s Player of the Year, and wicket-keeper Paul Burdett.
The event goes on over Saturday and Sunday, with 100 overs a day, starting at 11 am.
Admission is free, and all are welcome.
