New Histories of Love and Romance, c.1880-1960
Unlike the broader histories of emotions and of sexuality, scholarship on the history of love is still at a nascent stage. Evolutionary and psychoanalytic models frequently posit romantic love as universal and transhistorical. And yet there is an acknowledgment within most histories of the ‘long twentieth century’ that the institutions often associated with love (such as marriage and family life) as well as sexual mores and social and cultural manifestations have profoundly shifted during the period.

Professor Jamal Ameen of the Faculty of Advanced Technology will try to show the power of multidisciplinary statistical modeling in contributing to decision making processes in areas of econometrics, engineering, health care, social sciences and market modeling with specific attention given to Bayesian statistics and ending with Saddam’s genocide of the Kurdistani community as part of his life experiences.

The miner’s canary, may it fly
This free public lecture by Professor Anthony Beddow explores Wales’ contribution to the NHS, especially through the work of David Lloyd George and Aneurin Bevan.
It challenges current thinking which seeks to apply market-style solutions to health care and seeks to learn lessons from the recent financial crisis. It encourages the listener to remember the reasons why the NHS is shaped as it is so that alternatives can be robustly challenged rather than being meekly adopted.
